Itinerary

Day 1Rudno Polje (Pokljuka) → Planika Hut

The trek begins on the Pokljuka Plateau at Rudno Polje, a high alpine starting point that allows a gradual and well-paced ascent into the heart of the Julian Alps. The trail leads through open mountain terrain and past Vodnikov Dom before climbing higher into a rugged limestone landscape beneath Triglav’s south face. As the tree line fades, wide alpine views open up, giving a true sense of entering Slovenia’s high mountains. The day ends at Planika Hut, spectacularly positioned directly below Mount Triglav.

  • Distance: ~9–10 km

  • Elevation gain: +1,100–1,200 m

  • Hiking time: 6–7 hours

  • Overnight: Planika Lodge below Triglav

After the break, follows slow ascent on a more rocky terrain towards Planika hut. Trail gets steeper and at some points, we will help ourselves with cables for easier progression. Furthermore enjoy the change of scenery, as you will come from a green forestry world to a mystic high mountain one. Have some rest at Konj Pass and slowly climb on a rocky and steep terrain, however easy to follow the trail towards the hut. (2h 30 min)

Once you reach Planika hut on 2400 m, can afford traditional dinner and spend overnight in a cozy dorm.

Day 2Planika Hut → Mount Triglav (2864 meters) → Kredarica

An early start brings the highlight of the journey: the ascent of Mount Triglav (2864 m), Slovenia’s highest and most iconic peak. The climb follows a marked alpine route across exposed but well-secured terrain, rewarding hikers with unforgettable views across the Julian Alps and deep into neighboring mountain ranges. After time on the summit, the route descends to Kredarica, the most famous mountain lodge in Slovenia, where the evening is spent surrounded by high alpine scenery.

  • Distance: ~7–8 km

  • Elevation gain/loss: +900 m / −750 m

  • Hiking time: 6–7 hours

  • Overnight: Triglav Lodge at Kredarica

Kredarica → Prehodavci → Triglav Lakes Valley

Leaving the dramatic summit environment behind, the route traverses across the high alpine plateau toward Prehodavci Pass. This is a scenic transition day, combining elevated walking with expansive views and a steady descent into the softer, water-rich landscape of the Triglav Lakes Valley. The afternoon is spent among alpine lakes, meadows, and limestone formations, offering a completely different atmosphere from the previous days.

  • Distance: ~10 km

  • Elevation gain/loss: +400 m / −900 m

  • Hiking time: 5–6 hours

  • Overnight: Triglav Lakes Hut

Triglav Lakes Valley → Komna Plateau → Krn Lakes Hut

The trek continues westward through one of the most scenic long-distance sections of the Julian Alps. After passing several alpine lakes, the trail climbs gently onto the wide Komna Plateau, a historic highland area once used by shepherds and during World War I. The landscape gradually opens toward the western Julian Alps, and the day finishes at Koča pri Krnskih jezerih, set beside Slovenia’s largest alpine lake.

  • Distance: ~14–16 km

  • Elevation gain/loss: +400 m / −700 m

  • Hiking time: 6–7 hours

  • Overnight: Koča pri Krnskih jezerih

Krn Lakes Hut → Lepena Valley → Bovec

The final day leads out of the high mountains and down toward the Soča Valley. The descent passes through alpine pastures and forested slopes, gradually revealing views toward the emerald Soča River. The trek ends in Bovec, a lively alpine town known for its outdoor culture and relaxed atmosphere—an ideal place to celebrate the completion of a demanding and rewarding mountain journey.

  • Distance: ~12 km

  • Elevation loss: −800 m

  • Hiking time: 4–5 hours

  • Finish: Bovec
