Where to spend the night in Triglav National Park during winter time?

Overnight in Triglav National Park during wintertime?

If you are heading towards Slovenia during winter, which in the mountains is considered from October to June, and you are planning to do some hiking in the Julian Alps and Triglav National Park, it is not the easiest thing to find a place to overnight. Because the majority of mountain huts stay closed from October to the end of May.

However, there are some exceptions. Mountain hut at Komna plateau is a very popular destination for backcountry skiers and a very comfortable one, we could say it’s almost like a hotel. It is open all year round and it has a capacity of 108 people. Transport of the luggage is possible by an agreement with the cable car from Savica waterfall.

Below Slovenian highest mountain, Mt Triglav, there is a hut Triglavski dom na Kredarici. It is open from June to the end of September. From September to June, weathermen are taking care of the place. So there is a winter room with no heating, where you can overnight. You can also get a warm meal, but it’s better to call in advance to let them know that you are coming.

At some huts, you can find winter rooms, which offer basic accommodation and are always open during wintertime. But there is no heating and no food, so you have to bring your own supplies and a warm sleeping bag.

There are also several mountain bivouacs that offer shelter. This kind of accommodation is usually for  4-10 people and is free of charge. Open all year round, but without heating facilities, and in some cases, you have to bring your own mat.

Some other lower mountain huts are open only on weekends in case of good weather. Other more popular are open also in the wintertime.

You can always check working times, facilities, and contact numbers of the huts, bivouacs, and shelters at https://en.pzs.si/koce.php.
