Mount Triglav – General information about the mountain, how to climb it and difficulty of the climb

The highest Slovenian mountain

Mount Triglav is with 2864 m the highest Slovenian mountain. It is situated in the heart of Triglav National Park and the Julian Alps, in the western part of Slovenia, not far from alpine lakes Bled and Bohinj.

The name, Triglav, means three heads as the summit has the shape of three peaks. Back then it was also a Slavic three-headed pagan god, Triglav that people worshipped. He was a master of water, air, and earth.

Slovenians say that you have to climb it at least once in your lifetime to become a true Slovenian. The shape of the mountain you can notice as well in the national flag and it has been a national symbol since WWII when it was used by national freedom fighters.

Today for sure, it has become the most frequently climbed summit in the Julian Alps, not only among Slovenians but as well foreigners, who are visiting Slovenian mountains more and more each year for its beauty and unspoiled nature.

How to climb it

Mount Triglav climb is usually done in two days. There are several approaches to the top, the easiest goes from Pokljuka plateau, but you can start as well from Krma valley and Vrata valley, and even prolong your trek to a beautiful Seven Triglav lakes valley. You overnight in cozy mountain huts Planika or Kredarica below the top. Last part of the climb is via ferrata. The best and safest is to climb Triglav in a company of a professional local guide, as he knows all the routes, weather conditions, first aid, and of course he will make sure that you reach the top safely. He will also tell you a lot about local traditions, culture and flora & fauna in the park.

To climb Mount Triglav average fitness level is required and some experience with walking in the high mountainous alpine world.
